Harm Reduction Oakland, CA

Work hard, play hard. You are young in your career, and figuring it out as you go along. When you’re not working, you like to make time for fun. You’re a social person and your calendar is always packed.

Recently, it’s been a lot harder to focus at work and you’ve had some trouble managing your lifestyle. You wonder if maybe you’ve been going a little too hard….

You’ve been feeling like you are getting too deep into the party lifestyle, and lately, it’s been getting out of hand.

You’ve been going out more during the week and finding yourself tired and falling behind at work. You’re exhausted from trying to keep up with it all, and your work performance is suffering.

You notice that it feels like the only way you know how to connect with your friends is by partying together. It starts with a drink or two, and then well… things can go a little overboard. You feel like you are living a dual life, and lately your party life has been dominating.

You’ve tried to figure it out on your own, but it hasn’t been working.

All you see around you is go hard, or full stop and you don’t know how to navigate this on your own.

You’re afraid to ask for help, because there’s no way you are going to give up the fun. You don’t believe in abstinence and don’t want to be told what to do. You want help in toning it down, but you don’t know where to even begin.

Harm Reduction Therapy for Addiction Treatment in Oakland can help.

Hi, I’m Mary Fleisch, a licensed therapist passionate about harm reduction therapy for addiction treatment in Oakland.

In addition to my time in private practice, I have over 6 years of experience working with individuals in outpatient substance use treatment settings and in programs working with individuals with dual diagnoses (both mental health and substance use disorders).

In these settings, I have seen the results of both abstinence and harm reduction approaches. What I noticed with an abstinence only based approach is- the more you push that part of you that likes to indulge in substances or addictive behaviors to make a change it’s not ready to make, the more that part pushes back.

This often results in relapse, frustration, guilt and tremendous amounts of shame. Harm reduction therapy will work with that part, instead of against- meaning less frustration, less guilt, less shame- and moving towards the goals that YOU decide on, whether that be abstinence or learning how to tone it down.

Harm Reduction therapy in Oakland is a gentler (and effective!) approach.

I help professional party people figure out the balance of work and play on their own terms without the judgment. I won’t be telling you what to do or pressuring you to make changes you’re not ready to make.

We will start where you’re at, and work together towards the goals you decide on.  I’ll let you take the lead, and I will support you in your journey along the way.

If you are on an abstinence path- great! I am familiar with 12 step programs and happy to support you in building a sober lifestyle.

My clients experience a greater sense of ease over time in therapy, with improvement in their relationship with substances and in their relationship with themselves.

When therapy is working, you will feel like you have your play and work lives in balance. You’ll feel strong about your relationships with other people and you’ll feel good about the way you choose to let loose.

We will integrate a mind body approach where you’ll learn to learn and practice tools for improving your relationship with addictive behaviors and substances and find joy and connection in your personal and professional life.
